There are two types of computer scanning. One that is loaded on your computer to scan for virus's and the other one in which this article is about. This scanner is a hardware device that is pluged into your computer and used to send images to it. It scans images digitally and transfer them to your computer.

Scanners

Computer scanners have become an important part of the home and offices in the last few years. They can be used in many ways. Scanners is a computing device that analyses image like photograph and printed text then coverts them into digital images. When buying computer scanners, pay attention to the specifications, such as resolution, bit depth, type of sensor, interface and optical density. Look for computer scanners with at least 300 dpi; the higher the pixels, the better the image. There are different types of scanners, such as drum, desktop flatbed, handheld, sheet-fed, rotary, fingerprint, planetary and 3D scanners. Drum Scanners are the oldest of all the computer scanners. Make sure your computer scanner the best software needed for your jobs. Most scanners come equipped with basic, but generally weak--image-editing software. Upgrading to a more advanced program may be necessary to enhance your capabilities.

Function

Flatbed scanners are also called desktop scanners. These are the most commonly used scanners. Sheet-fed scanners are similar to flatbed scanners with the exception that the document is moved and the scanner is immobile. The handheld scanner uses the same basics as a flatbed scanner, but rely on the user to move them instead. Drum scanners are mainly used by the publishing industry to capture detailed images. You can also find scanners that are also a printer, it is concerned a all-in-one.

Computer scanners may interpret symbols as letters or punctuation, and will not be able to
understand the text within them. But for digital still pictures, from scanners or digital cameras, there is just one image recorded.

This is a business card scanner comparison between IRISCard (IC) Pro, CardScan (CS) and Neat business cards scanners and their respective software.

The IRISCard pro software gives you the option to use your own flatbed scanner to scan up to 10 business cards at a time. CS too gives you the option of using any scanner that you may have and on top of that, CS's focus is on the actual contact management system. Thus providing you with database software that automatically files your contacts and retrieves them on demand.

Neat scanners also come bundled with a Digital Filing system that sorts your data into various categories like business cards, receipts etc. All three support the Mac Platform in addition to Windows.

On the hardware front, Neat gives you options between mobile scanners and a desktop scanner. The desktop scanner can handle pretty much anything and has robust build. CS has small, mobile scanners that are very compact and imminently portable. IC provides a small pen scanner, a slim mobile scanner and a business card scanner that is also small in dimensions.

So regarding the actual physical scanner, this business card scanner comparison finds that CardScan does not have variety but has quality, Neat has two very potent products and IRIS has the most variety for a buyer.

No verdicts here because this business card scanner comparison article is meant to help you find a tool that is best for your unique needs. According to popularity though, Neat and CS are higher up than IC Pro. One thing I love about most of these competitors is that they have a free online service for their customers.

How Does A Barcode Scanner Work?

How Does A Barcode Scanner Work?

ItemTitle

To understand how a barcode scanner work, it is important to first understand how barcodes are produced and being read.

Each barcode has specific symbols defined as a series of bars in a barcode. The way to differentiate the barcode is by the height and width as well as the bar spacing. Each strip of bar can represent a number, character or alphanumeric character depending on which type of barcode symbology set is used.

Usually a barcode contains a start and end bar to denote the starting and ending point of the barcode. Sometimes, there is an additional bar called the checksum bar. The purpose of the checksum bar is used to determine whether the barcode is correct after calculation and ensures the accuracy of the barcode.

The barcode scanner's photosensors can then read the barcodes and convert them to electrical pulses. Since each strip of bar is equivalent to a character, the barcode software can easily convert these electrical pulses into readable text that can be displayed on a monitor. This process is actually very fast and only takes a few milliseconds.

Nowadays there are many varieties of barcode scanners models. Their usage depends a lot on the type of industry and the work environment. Examples are desktop models, handheld and portable models.

One of the most popular type is the wireless barcode scanner. They connect to the base station or workstations wirelessly and can transmit data back to the terminal as long as they are within the wireless range radius.

Wireless barcode scanner are often used in the warehouse industry where workers can easily scan a barcode that can be placed in awkward positions or angles. It is also used in industries where goods are often moving from one location to another. Using a wireless barcode scanner allows freedom of movement and thus more efficient.

The Working Principles Behind a Barcode Scanner

The Working Principles Behind a Barcode Scanner

ItemTitle

There are many types of barcode scanners available on the market as of now, and some of them are really impressive. For example, the laser scanner is a very interesting piece of equipment once you understand the principle behind it. One of the most famous alternative to laser scanners are CCD based scanners.

CCD scanners are a different kind of scanners as they don't have any moving parts thus they're more reliable and less prone to failure. Another type of scanner is the 2d barcode scanner which is the most popular type of scanner. You'll see it in almost any shop, may it be a clothing shop, a hypermarket or just your regular corner street shop.

Laser scanners use moving mirrors and light diodes and are more likely to fail in a shorter amount of time, whereas CCD barcode scanners use LEDs that are known to last 10 times more than light diodes. 2d barcode scanners also make use of the CCD technology to function.

The principle behind the CCD technology isn't in any way mind blowing - a CCD scanner uses an array of small light sensors that are pointed at the barcode section on a product. The way these scanners work is that they form a sort of grid of tiny laser like lights on the surface of the barcode part of the product. Because barcodes are usually printed on white backgrounds a part of that light emitted from the scanner is reflected to a receiver inside the head of the scanner. That light is translated into a voltage using a photovoltaic cell, and that amount of voltage corresponds to a single type of product in the store.

After the information is sent from the scanner to the computer it's then cross referenced to a database - which is also stored on the computer - to which the scanner is connected to. All this stuff happens in a matter of nanoseconds - the reader emits a grid of laser like lights on the barcode part of the product. A part of the light is reflected back from the white surface to a receiver placed inside the head of the barcode scanner (also known as a photovoltaic cell) which translates the light into a voltage and after wards cross references it to a database to find out what product it scanned.

And that's just how barcode scanners work.

The Many Uses of a Scanner

The Many Uses of a Scanner

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

One of the most useful inventions to come along with the computer age is the scanner. Unlike a photocopier which simply makes a copy of an article, a scanner allows you to preserve a digital image of just about anything you can fit on a scanner bed.

Here are a few things you can do with a scanner.

Copying Documents - You can turn a good flatbed scanner into a copying machine by scanning in those receipts and other important documents and then use your printer to have a copy or just keep a digital copy. The best thing about this is that you could use software to improve the documents, if you need to take out a grease smudge.

Other things a scanner can do is copy a quick recipe out of Grandmas old recipe book, or a page from a magazine that shows the instructions for a new at-home project you have been wanting to do. Maybe there are some old documents in the family that you would like to have a copy of for yourself, those can be added to the computer files just as any other document.

Scanning Photos For Printing - Photographs are nice especially if you are a professional photographer, but you could use the photos for websites to display your latest DIY project. The images could be used for desktop wallpaper or sending to friends and family through email. Because they are digitized you can use computer software to edit them, and make interesting images on top of the first.

Here is something else you could do with a scanner and software. Using the edit feature you can enlarge your projects on the computer screen and then print out only that part. This allows you to make a full-sized pattern of anything you wish, turn around and use it to trace the object on plywood. Once you are done, cut out life-sized reindeer, cows, antique cars, you name it.

Faxing Documents - You can Fax a document that is already in your computer, but if that document is on a sheet of paper, you have a problem. A scanner can scan it in, then you can send it out by using the fax driver. When you have long distance relatives, and you find something in a magazine that they need to see, put the magazine in the scanner and then from the computer send them the information.

OCR - Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software is used to convert images to readable text. Once they are converted you can use a word processor to make the changes that are required. OCR software usually comes with the scanner.

There always seems to be a need to try getting a hard copy of some document or picture into the computer files, and a scanner is the only way to achieve that. Having a good scanner could really improve your home or office by allowing you to copy, organize and save important files and photos on your computer.

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

The 35mm slide scanner is a boon for people who were born well before the advent of digital era and have stocks of 35mm slides and negatives stored away in cupboards, garages, attics or under the stairs with lots of memories captured in them. The purpose for doing so is to re-live and commemorate those precious moments again on special occasions and family gatherings. However, that seldom happens and the negatives and slides are left untouched for years. This is mainly because it is just not that easy to recover and set up the 35mm slide projector and the screen. Well, today you don't have to go through such troubles every time you want to share the forgotten memories with your friends and family.

With the advancement in the technology, you can now very easily resurrect your older slides and negatives by using a 35mm slide scanner. A negative and slide scanner allows you to convert your older slides and negatives into a digital format that can then be stored on your PC. What is a Digital Trunking Scanner?

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Once just a tool of a reporter on the beat, now many ordinary people use scanners to listen in on public safety channels for keeping up with what is going on in their area. Depending on where you live, your jurisdiction may use a conventional system or a "trunked" system for communications for their public safety personnel. They may even use a digital trunking system. Let's take a look at these different technologies and how to choose the right scanner.

Trunking Explained

Trunked systems are an improvement over traditional systems by the vary nature of how they handle frequencies. With a trunking system, public safety services can get more mileage from less use of the radio band. Instead of using frequencies dedicated for a specific purpose, all agencies share a set of frequencies and have their own unique "talkgroups".

what is digital trunking scanner?

The difference between a digital trunking scanner and an analog one is in how the voice data gets broadcast. Traditionally in a trunking system, the voice data is sent over radio signals and thus is analog in nature. In a digital trunking scanner, this voice data gets converted to data and is sent as modulated digital data to the receiver.

What this means for the user is that in a digital system the sound quality of transmissions can be much better than in analog systems. Unfortunately, this comes with the downside of an increase in lost signals and incompatibility with analog based systems.

What Type of Scanner Do I need?

The type of system used for broadcasting public safety channels varies by jurisdiction. In order to know whether you need an analog or digital unit, you would first need to know what type of system is in use in your area. Moving forward, many areas are converting to digital trunking systems over the traditional systems. Still, in order to receive signals in your area you must have a receiver of the same type as the transmissions.

Good Cell Phone Scanner Frequencies

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Cell phone scanner frequencies are essential to cell phone operation.

A frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit time. It is most commonly thought of as a wave that goes from one place to another. The up and down crests of the wave as it moves along would be the repeating occurrences. If you change the speed of the up and down crests of the wave, you change the frequency.

The types of up and down waves cell phones use are essentially radio waves. Most cell-phone carriers typically get 832 radio frequencies to use in a particular city. Cell phone scanner frequencies are usually used in sets of two. Each cell phone uses two frequencies per call. This is known as a duplex channel. Consequently, there are typically 395 voice channels per carrier.

Therefore, each cell has about 56 voice channels available. In other words, in any cell, the cell phone scanner frequencies can have 56 people talking on their cell phone at one time. These older and more basic analog cellular systems are considered first-generation mobile technology, or 1G. With the introduction of digital transmission methods about 10 years ago (2G), the number of available channels increases. This was known as 2G. And now we have 3G or third generation networks. This dramatically increases the number of channels.

Although cell phone scanner frequencies have increased, cell phones have low-power transmitters in them. Many cell phones are less powerful than the old CB radios. This does have some advantages. The low power transmission means that the cell phone can use smaller batteries. Also, phone call transmissions stay within a city cell, near a cell tower. This means that the same cell phone scanner frequencies can be used over again in different parts of the city.

The cellular approach requires a large number of base stations in a city of any size. A typical large city can have hundreds of cell towers. But because so many people are using cell phones, costs remain low per user. Each carrier in each city also runs one central office called the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO). This office handles all of the phone connections to the normal land-based phone system, and controls all of the base stations in the region.

How to Program a Symbol LS2208 Barcode Scanner

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

The Symbol LS2208 scanner is a very popular, lightweight, ergonomically designed barcode scanner used in conjunction with many Point of Sale (POS) software.  However, prior to using the scanner with POS software there may be some very simple programming steps that will need to be take to get the scanner ready for operation.

One of the first steps to programming a Symbol Scanner is to program the type of interface that you will be using with the scanner.  If you are using USB or Keyboard Wedge interfaces, you don't need to worry about programming the scanner as the scanners come pre-programmed to use these interfaces.

If you are going to be using the RS-232 or the IBM 46XX interfaces there is a very simple step you must follow to program the Scanner.  In the LS2208 Quick Start Guide, under STEP 3 you will have to scan the appropriate barcode for either an OPOS/JPOS or a Standard RS-232 interface.  Simply by pointing the scanner at the appropriate barcode and scanning it, you will be programming the scanner to use that interface.  The Quick Start Guide also has barcodes you can scan for the PORT 5B or PORT 9B - IBM 46XX interfaces or to switch back to USB or Keyboard Wedge mode.

Once you have the interface programmed, the next thing you will need to program is the enter key, carriage return/line feed function.  This function programs the scanner to append a carriage return/line feed character to be sent to the computer at the end of each barcode that is scanned.  This will eliminate the need for your cashiers to have to hit enter after scanning a barcode in their POS system.

To program the enter key, carriage return/line feed functionality into the scanner all you need to do is simply scan the three barcodes found in the Quick Start Guide.  There is also the option of appending a tab key to the end of a barcode scan in the manual as well, and is performed the exact same way as programming the enter key.

What is the Best Portable Printer Scanner?

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

If you want to know what the best portable printer scanner is, then all you have to do is look at the available models and decide what is best. Answering this question should be easy since there are only a few models of this kind of printer. Unfortunately, the available models do not have features that can be considered the best. They may have been considered the best at one time, but as of today, they are not.

The portable scanners and printers that we're talking about are Canon's BJC printers, BJC 50, BJC55, BJC80 and BJC85 to be exact. Do not be misled! These printers cannot do the job of a printer and a scanner at the same time. It is either a printer or a scanner at the moment. This is made possible by the optional image scanner cartridge. It takes the place of the ink cartridge so that instead of printing ink, it scans.

There are a lot of printer scanners, portable printing devices and portable scanners available in the market today. However, there are only a few portable printer scanners. The models mentioned before are pretty much the only portable models available in the market today and even they are already discontinued. After their production, Canon continued on concentrating on portable printers, accelerating its speed and enhancing their resolutions. However, they did not incorporate scanners into its design.

If you are to ask which the best portable printer is, then it will be easy. We have Canon's Pixma iP100, which currently holds the highest resolution of portable printers. We also have HP's OfficeJet H470, which prints at 22 pages per minute, which is also the fastest of the mobile printers. However, if you are to ask what the best portable printer scanner is, it will be hard to choose from the existing models since their performance is only a fraction of what the current printers can do.

The BJC series of Canon is capable of printing up to a speed of 5pages per minute in monochrome. In color, it can print up to a maximum speed of 2ppm. In terms of resolution, these printers can print up to a maximum resolution of 720 dots per inch. These are hardly what you would call the best speeds and it doesn't even include the scanning resolution. Scanners available in the market today are capable of scanning to a resolution of 9600dpi. The BJC printers from canon can only scan up to 360dpi.

It may have been a marketing choice for Canon not to continue in making portable printer scanners. However, with the continuous decrease of electronic goods and the continuous increasing demand of portable products, there is certainly a market for portable printer scanners that they have not considered. So for now, we have to settle for high performance portable printers and high performance portable scanners, not both in one package.

So let us go back to the question. What is the best portable printer scanner? Well, it doesn't exist yet.
